Interpersonal conflict and counterproductive work behavior: the moderating roles of emotional intelligence and gender

Purpose This paper aims to examine how interpersonal conflict at work might enhance employees’ propensity engage in counterproductive behavior (CWB), as well this relationship be attenuated by emotional intelligence. It also considers the attenuating role of intelligence depend on gender. Design/methodology/approach Survey data were collected from 193 employees working different organizations Pakistan. Findings Interpersonal relates positively CWB, but is weaker higher levels The negative buffering particularly strong among women compared men. Practical implications Given that individuals high are better regulating their emotions, training may a powerful tool for reducing hostility elicited organizational members response and, consequently, engagement CWB. Originality/value study uncovered mechanism underlies conflict–CWB gender and makes suggestions managers minimizing harmful effects conflict.
